Me and the missus are doing route 66 in 2020 and I need suggestions for places to visit

I live on route 66, west of St. Louis, MO

but having lived the route back in its heyday, I never considered it to be much of a tourist destination. It's being marketed as such in recent years, but I'd have to ponder a while on what is worthy of visiting.
