thing is, minor technicalities with the code on remebering which threads to collapse.
technically, you could have something like cgi::irc
and have the page constantly updating.

in Lotus Notes/Domino.
I'm trying to write a discussion forum at the moment on Domino (because that's what I know) and I wish it DIDN'T have collapsable threads (cause my users want flat threads!)

But server load would increase exponentially compared to current user-server load ratio which is bad enough that we can't run an archive search
