Magic Wand of gayness might be the tool for the job, with the right settings.

I tried magic wand
but the ball is lots of different shades of yellow, is there a way of getting it to select all yellow?

When you select magic wand
on the top bar there's a numerical value between 1 and 100. I think it's called "tolerance". Play with that and you should get a result. the two backgrounds are far enough away from yellow for it to work.

Magic wand on the black above
Inverse
You can then use alt+lassoo to remove any bits selected you don't want

Select colour range works well
just keep adding to the range by holding shift down

Is it all one image
or a .psd in layers?
(
supermoore: HUNG, Tue 13 Jul 2004, 14:44,

its a jpeg
or a .psd with one layer!
circular lasso is not accurate enough - at least I can't control it well enough

chop it out roughly then
and use a feathered eraser to tidy it up

Use shift and Alt to start from the centre of the ball
There is no other accurate way of cutting it out.

depends what software
if you have a selection tool try and make it spherical (hold shift on the eliptical tool) then drag it to the size of the ball and move it until it covers it.
Or try the magic wand tool.

i tried that
but when I move the lasso it moves what its selected as well

you need to make the selection then click the hollow arrow rather than the solid arrow (in photoshop the black arrow moves the selected bit but the other one moves the selection only)
Or try using the cursor keys to move just the selection.
