... BEATTIE!
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 9:39, archived)
might whack vmware on though :)
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 9:43, archived)
oooh tempted
will have to nuke the hard disks though; spread those sexy /var /bin /home directories across the disks :)
plus if you watch badly ripped DVDs, the PC doesn`t lock up if it can`t read the damned thing, like with all the Windows players!

i'm having my joy using slackware
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 9:50, archived)
save for two problems
1. I have no wine.
2. It's Sunday and I must remain tea-total for my Driver Training School tommorrow.
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 9:44, archived)
how can this be so, Bill Gates must destroy it immediately *sets Robot Bill Gates on "KILL"*
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 9:47, archived)
edit: i.e. you don`t have to install it on the hard disk

whether we like it or not - eventually he will own all the souls

but I'm not convinced that Linux really works
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 9:56, archived)
it works perfectly fine but people are just too lazy to find out how good it really is! windows deserve negative feedback...it's a sewer into your pc
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:05, archived)
I don't know anything about the subject or the validity of such scurrilous rumour-mongering probably started by a Ginger Haired bespectacled gentleman who's name sound like Mill Rakes
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:07, archived)
but it`s as much the manufacturer`s fault too.. using cheap and nasty hardware and doing everything in software that nobody can decipher
- I`ll have to bin the WaveFinder (which I really like) and the web cam as there`s no support at all :(
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:08, archived)
i've had just as much trouble finding drivers for crappy hardware using windows as i have using linux
there might be help here if it's quick cam related:
qce-ga.sourceforge.net/
...
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:13, archived)
do any of the Linux instant messengers support webcams?
never really use the cam to be honest (except for when I drop trou and show my member off to young children)
.. that`s a joke by the way, Mr. Police Officer

(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:37, archived)
excellent :D
hot top of sock action ;)
do you get nasty free shoes too?
*runs away*
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:39, archived)
i dunno if there's a webcam IM client but it shouldn't surprise me
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:35, archived)
not a big loss to be honest, cos I never use it
the WaveFinder though :(
bye bye DAB radio :(

Psion never released any of the software, so nobody`s been able to take it apart and do it for Linux - the hardware just seems to receive the radio signal, and the software does all the decoding to turn it into sound; if the hardware had been a bit more.... er.. useful, it might have been a lot easier :(
they stopped making the bloody thing too, so you`d think they might have just released the code for free
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:45, archived)
the only thing I really don`t like about Linux, and never really have, is the file requester tools, for saving and loading files
but there`s a lot to be said for having a machine that`ll stay up for weeks/months without having to be rebooted
OH! OH! and if you screensaver lock the PC and go home, it doesn`t take the machine 20 minutes to "warm up" the next day while it tries to load everything (that`s already running) back into memory - no idea why Windows does this
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:00, archived)
and know only the simple things. I wouldn't want to start having to get used to a new OS. You & Kaiser are probably spot-on with what you say but CHANGE IS BAD - IT BRINGS BAD THINGS ;)
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:03, archived)
but that would be silly! - but definitely have a go with one of the live versions and see what you think, remembering that it runs off the CD so it`ll be slow :)
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:09, archived)
And it isn't going to bugger up my present setting is it?
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:12, archived)
it doesn't do anything to the machine at all
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:15, archived)
you could try SUSE personal: download.novell.com/sendfile?fileid=-1r3q7QIc8s~
(hopefully that address is OK) - it`s 1.2GB :\
this is one you`d have to pay for though; it`s very polished (!) - I think you can download it for free, but you pay for installer CDs/DVDs and to be honest online installation can be a pain
or Ubuntu wot I use:
releases.ubuntu.com/warty/warty-release-live-i386.iso
640MB ish
em.. Knoppix:
www.mirror.ac.uk/mirror/ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso
I`ve never used this, so I dunno what it`s like - people seem to like it
~700MB, so make sure you`ve a big enough cd :)
Slax:
ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/linux/linux-live.org/SLAX-4.2.x/slax-4.2.0.iso
~180MB - Kaiser`s choice - never used that one :) I did use the really old slackware (when it came on 40 floppies or something) and it was alright, but that was ohh nearly 10 years ago!
(, Sun 27 Feb 2005, 10:19, archived)
:)
check out the different versions:

i would try this one:

if you`re lucky, they`ll mount the hard disk partitions, so you can save and open your existing files

I quite like Ubuntu - the installation and upgrade is quite nice (uses synaptic), except that it`s all shitty brown by default :D
edit: it`s a customised Debian, in case you didn`t hear of it

do you know if the proper installable version is any good with NVidia cards and TFT monitors? that`s been my biggest headache so far (and not too much hassle with Ubuntu thank god - piece of piss with SuSE, but it`s not that up to date, but great for the web server)
