It's normally dark pink, but can sometimes have a slight orangey hue to it

farmed salmon is that insepid pink colour
and nice wild poched caught salmon has, well, a salmon colour, which is quite pale in comparision to the farmed stuff.

proper salmon is light pink
smoked salmon is bright pink, verging on orange i suppose. Maybe your mate is colourblind? Or has an obsession with the colour orange?
