Dude, please replace your picture with this 36k optimised version

(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:23, archived)
and because its fucking easy to make files this size that don't fuck over peoples dial up modems or restricted bandwidths!
Also, other people take the care and effort to do so, and seeing as this is such a nice, friendly community place, it's a good idea to encourage others to too. :)

Look, I realise everyone likes to get on their b3ta high horses, but seriously, I'm not changing it, partly because it's too much faff with my webspace, and partly because instead of saying something nice or ignoring it people are trying to make someone feel small. I've been here long enough to know the rules thank you.

Our happy man is just being helpful in a typically non-bastard way; PLUS it's going to make your web space lighter! Yay! :-)

250kb for animations as a rule of thumb, 50kb for static stuff. If it it pains you yo optimize it simply host a thumbnail using the codz.
We're all curious folk here, and click on stuff..
:-)

so you've just wasted 36k of my precious bandwidth, you despicable rotter
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:36, archived)
but for the valiant work that can be done in clean optimisation.
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:41, archived)
I dunno, it could be smaller, but 100k isn't all that huge. 100k was a sensible limit 3-4 few years ago here when dial-up was more common, but with broadbeans being popular now there's less incentive to shave a few k here and there.
I don't disagree that if everyone did it things would be quicker though.

(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:20, archived)
In fact, I'm tempted to.
When did this new rule come in, I've never made a picture for here at less than 100k
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:27, archived)
post it bigger!
/I posted a big image on a board and I don't give a shit blog

People who wish they were mods and have to have their little ego trips by clicking on every single picture that comes up and seeing how big it is so the can decide if it's too big or not rather than actually just commenting on the picture.
If any one single person has ever noticed that a 100k picture has loaded too slowly for them then I'd agree, as it is they need to find something better to get ranty about of an evening.

but what does wind me up is when people start having a go at "nazi's" who are simply asking others to follow the rough guidelines of the site. At the end of the day, what harm does that really do, other than helping people to understand the nuances of optimisation?
No one had a go at DMQOB until he shouted "fuck that!" which was really waving a red rag to a bull.
It's almost getting to a point that people are trying to wind up board members by putting big files up. What ever happened to everyone using this site for happy thoughts and fun?!
work together people, or I'll cry :(
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:39, archived)
Just look at the pretty pictures, comment on them, or not.
Have you noticed the board moving slowly because of large pictures WITHOUT looking at the file sizes? Have you bugger, so why's it a problem unless people start posting obviously MASSIVE pictures?
That DMQOB though, he's a right one and no mistake, what a fella!
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:42, archived)
but never mind that. It's about community spirit. If I accidentally posted a picture that was 120k and someone said "thats 115k Toast" then I'd thank them for pointing it out and change it.
Really, are people THAT busy that they can't hit Open, re-save and reupload?
Common courtesy and friendly loveliness

and have NEVER ever made a picture at 50k.
And I can bet money that I'm not alone in this.
What I object to is being villified for making something that is small. I've not made a 1 meg picture, it's 115k.
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:50, archived)
when I joined up there were people killing Newbies for posting over 49k, I'm amazed you dodged their bullets and arrows.
But why post a picture over 50k? This site is hardly requires print quality? :D

I like you, you are funny.
But seriously, I imagine b3ta crawls like a bitch for anyone on dial up anyway, and to be fair my little picture isn't going to make that much difference.
(, Thu 29 Jun 2006, 21:34, archived)
but comments like "fuck that, you should think yourself lucky it's that small." just come across as rather selfish really.
Anyway, have a jaffacake O
