Yeah, when you place something in the microwave
you need to make sure there's space for the turntable to rotate or it won't cook evenly, hence the top picture is correct, plenty of turning space, but the bottom one is wrong, because the middle will be really over-cooked and the extremities will still be only luke warm.

Plus you want to remember to poke some holes in the item with a fork or it will explode and cover your microwave in bits of pie/baby/etc.
