/edit: Try no. 2 on the right... looks a bit less like tip toeing, and it's faster which eliminates some of the ED-209-ness.

I think it's the foward-backwards head movment, through the neck, that give the natural feel
but that would mean that you have to felx the neck, compromising the character design. Since it's completely unrealistic anyway, why not make Mort walk like a human?
