she was a weird psychic power evil woman/man type thing.
One of her powers was manipulating stuff like electrical fields, recordings etc. That's how she lived beyond the grave, as a sort of electronic television virus.

It's slightly better* explained in the book.



* in a Japanese horror doesn't-really-need-to-make-all-that-much-sense stylee.
