My take on this is, why have silly exceptions to the rules based on time/status/image type/etc. etc. when it's pretty obvious a lot of people are struggling to get to grips with the basic ruleset without them having to learn a timetable of exemptions too. Either the rules are worth following or not. All I did was post a reminder about the FAQ, and I did it with a little hummus for good measure. It's pretty sad that some saw that as an opportunity to jump on the childish "moan at teh nazi LOL!" bandwagon.

posting a reminder for a guideline designed to reduce a problem, which actually increases the problem, makes a mockery of the guideline you're so vehemently trying to encourage people to adhere to, doesn't it? Hardly the best way to promote the guideline, I feel. I mean, if people cared so much about their precious bytes, a simple "Hey, that image is a little large. Could you reduce it to under 50k?" would suffice. To save even more precious bytes, they could also decide to delete their comment if they notice that someone has already pointed it out to the original poster.

The outrage that usually ensues after someone posts an over-the-limit picture suggests that most people care more about the principal of someone breaking the rules, than the rules themselves.
