but when i first got here, I was told to save as a gif instead of a jpg, because it was smaller.

Depends on what sort of image you have
since this is photo based, jpeg is best.

yeah, if you're doing simple text or big plain colours Gif is your friend
anything photographic and jpeg does the job, just remember to switch on the compression or "save to web".
