how do you get shadows like that? i always end up drawing them by hand with lots of fade and smudge and they never quite work out.

The old fashioned way is to duplicate the source image in a new layer
fill it with black, flip it with the transform tool and skew, and add some blur filters
There are Photoshop filter add-ons however your marvelous hard earned-wages can purchace, or chance upon..
