personally i like the idea of a mixture
i know what you mean by the sense of community -- there's no way anyone would bother looking at anything i've posted if we were all segregated. the same goes for anyone else whose username isn't all that well known or who, frankly, is as talentless as i am. at the same time i do like the idea of a separate board for challenge entries and for people who just want to talk shit.

I used to be a mod on thetransformers.net forums*. This was a good few years ago, t'was my first real internet forum experience and there were some top people on there.

Anyway, I couldn't imagine it ever changing - but they updated it every couple of years, and after a very short period of re-adjustment you realised that the new version was a shitload better than the old one.
