Do you think £300 for a Canon 1000D from a mate is reasonable,
or should I ask him to knock off a bit more?

or a kit? £300 - 400 seems to be around the going price but you should get 1 or 2 lenses with at that price, seeing as it is your mate. Maybe a grip or something if he has it.
