Water balloons
Always remind me of being on holiday with my parents in Majorca when I was about 7, and a balloon full of piss thrown by some lads on a balcony of a hotel we were walking past landed right on my head.
Mum cried. Dad shouted the word "cunts" for the one and only time I've ever heard him use it. Then we went back to the hotel and I had a shower and got changed and then we went out again and they let me have a massive ice cream after dinner.

It could have literally been one of their bladders.
"Balcony Bladders" is an old traditional game played by the Merchant Navy since the late 17th century, where sailors would relieve ill-striken folk of their bladder and throw them at a target which was painted in goats blood on the ground below.
What's probably happened is your family accidentally walked across a goat-board and got in the way of some lads playing the modernised version of the game.
