There are some great meds used in paediatrics for sedation that are not routinely known about. First, Vallergan. Its an anti-histamine that has a really strong sedative effect on kids...zonks the little shits right out but the dose is pretty standard.
The other (and the one that sprung instantly to mind if I am honest the minute I saw these people harping on on TV...Ian Huntley and Billy Joe Whatshernames Step dad anyone? Want to appear innocent? Go on telly!) was Chloral Hydrate. www.a1b2c3.com/drugs/chl02.htm.
I think it's a bit early but I am putting in a pre-emptive AICMFP.

First papa from the first result for Vallergan...
Vallergan tablets, syrup and forte syrup all contain the active ingredient alimemazine (previously known as trimeprazine in the UK). Alimemazine is derived from a group of medicines called phenothiazines, and is a type of medicine called a non-sedating antihistamine. (http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100002712.html)
But then later ...
Alimemazine is called a sedating antihistamine because it enters the brain in significant quantities and causes drowsiness.
Alimemazine is also used as a pre-med in children to produce sleepiness before operations. It is given one to two hours before the anaesthetic.
