Seems like an application of
Occam's Razor to me - what's more likely: a kidnapper who doesn't know the family just happened to see them on the beach, followed them back to their apartment, knew that they'd left all the kids alone and the door unlocked, knew which room was Maddie's and removed her without barely a sound OR two clearly negligent parents weren't careful enough, their daughter died and they tired to cover it up...

Anyway, whether their telling the truth or not, surely they should at least be prosecuted for leaving pre-school children alone in an unlocked apartment while they went out for a meal.
