Sounds like the experience put him off for good
It's like there's a whole other side to directing you just don't hear about that's inherently psychopathic. I remember an equally revealing interview with Bryan Singer on a BBC show about the Hollywood machine a number of years back where he went into terrifying detail about the levels of stress he went through while directing the first X Men film (which was his first big budget movie). Terry Gilliam famously lost the use of his legs due to stress whilst battling to get Brazil finished. You've almost got to possess a maniacal personality to thrive I think.
