Racking up more bodies than the Harold Shipman Snuff-o-meter
It's The Gruniad's running tally of people killed by the police in the US. They kill more people in days than the UK police kill in decades. 658 so far this year, and we're only in July.
Plus: Cleveland police are having a raffle to support one of their colleagues who is on restricted duty after he shot and killed an unarmed man. One of the prizes is a nice hand gun.

No sense of irony.

truly grim statistics, done in a really great searchable manner.
my mother read a local news piece recently tallying up the numbers of police shootings here in Florida, and asked... "Can it be true that Florida has had more police caused fatalities this week than all of the UK in 10 years? And could it be true not all of the UK's Police force carry guns? How can they do their job?"
"I said yes, I don't need to look up the actual numbers. they likely are not exaggerated. Amazingly, they seem to manage without mass obliteration of the police force."
I say this as a gun owning American, one fatality is far too many. This goes not just for the police, but those 'stand your ground' folks as well.

Grim indeed.
The gun control issue is broadly debated, and has probably passed the point of no return, but cops killing citizens in such huge numbers? Surely that is something people have to sit up and take notice of? I'm surprised that it has been a UK broadsheet that has really raised the profile of the issue - I know in the US there is the cops vs. black killing issue, but this is even bigger than that. US Cops kill large numbers of civilians. End of.

gun control
will never happen here in an effective manner. (i am sure coxxy will be along shortly to explain why better than i)
but i DO worry, when the police no longer 'protect and serve' and are out for their own safety at whatever cost without proper training on defusing a situation. I have seen first hand how police intervention can escalate a situation with a mentally ill person that was not a deadly threat, but became one when 20 cops pointed guns at him.
When the people are the enemy, who protects the people?
saying this sort of thing, i get a looks like i am crazy.
(i clearly am)

We had a couple of spree killings with firearms that led to public opinion being in favour of tight gun control.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_school_massacre
You've had many more sprees yet public opinion never seems to have reached that critical point.

We dont have a 300 year old bit of paper that the gun companies claim allows everyone to be armed at all times.
Also we dont have hundreds of gun companies paying off politicians here to repeat the lie over and over again for the last 100+ years and brainwashing the yanks into thinking its a right to have guns.
Its about a much of a right as it is for them to be allowed to eat pizza.
( , Tue 28 Jul 2015, 10:56, Share, Reply)
I think we used to have stuff about being armed, mandatory archery practice etc.
But we moved with the times.
BTW Trufax*
One of the main drives behind the creation of the NHS was all the soldiers coming back after WW2 with a lot of them needing long term care.
The fact that the UK now had a large part of the working class UK population that was now hurting, angry and importantly still had their weapons including a lot of looted nazi guns may have lead to it's creation.
*may not be totally true but was told to me** by old time socialists.

Yes just imagine if the fletchers and bowmakers had thought of bribing the government we might still all be packing longbows and having 2 hours of enforced archery practice every week.
We could all go Welsh hunting in Chester also, everyone trying to find a Welshman in the town of Chester after midnight.

Glad nobody ever tested it.

How about August bank holiday? we could organise a B3ta meetup and all chase you about Chester while trying to shoot you with longbows.
We could all shout nonsense about it being our rights and that you will take our bows from our cold dead hands etc etc..

another interesting statistic there
Is that they aren't mainly black, like the black populous over there would have you believe. They kill everyone equally.

Are you accounting for demographics?
Whites: 63.7% of US population / 48.1% of Police deaths Any cause / 49.2% by gunshot
Black/African Americans: 12.2% of population / 26.3% of Police deaths Any cause / 24.2% by gunshot
Hispanic/Latino: 16.4% of population / 14.6% of Police deaths Any cause / 15.5% by gunshot

Go on then, I'll bite
Yes, yes they do kill more white people. No-one disagrees with that. However, assuming the above figures are true:
total number of white people / total number of black people = 5.2
number of white people killed by police / number of black people killed by police = 1.8
You are roughly 5.2/1.8 = 2.9 times more likely to be killed by a US police officer if you are black than if you are white.

Haha thanks.
Yes you are more LIKELY but the numbers clearly state more white people have ACTUALLY been killed.

Which isn't in question, and isn't pertinent
More black people are ACTUALLY killed as a proportion of population than white people, which so clearly illustrates why there is a problem that I'm unsure of why you can't see it.
If there were just ten black people in the US, and three black people were killed by police, would the relatively low number of black people killed be a valid refutation of the idea that black people were disproportionately killed? Of course not.

But more white people are ACTUALLY killed.
If 100 people are killed, according to the stats:
48 are white
26 are black
15 are Hispanic
More white people are ACTUALLY killed.

Sorry, but who is disputing that?
What some people are upset about is that blacks are disproportionately killed/harrassed/incarcerated based on demographics and criminality.

No, the numbers state more whites have been killed.
Demographics are irrelevant here as we are just looking at the actual kill figures

30 people dead already this year alone from the "less lethal" alternative to guns, guns, guns.
30 people tased TO DEATH in less than seven months. WT actual F?

In a society armed to the teeth
cops are going to have itchy fingers, and likely to shoot first to null out the possibility of being shot themselves. I would assume Americans knows this
