Old Hat (but still good)
That is a common technique for heating metals. We used it 40 years ago in the manufacture of drills both brazing and forming flutes through dies. One of my colleagues put his steel capped safety shoe too close to the coil and burnt his toes. We called him Johnny Hotfoot after that.
It would heat a 12.7mm (1/2") bar to bright orange in about 3 seconds.
