Nope. Barts Health has a thriving unit doing sphincter preservation surgery, which used to be led by Professor Norman Williams (recent President of the Royal College of Surgeons)
Basically resecting very low cancers that previously would have left you with a colostomy bag; preserving the sphincter muscles mean you can shit out of your own arsehole rather than into a bag.
The associated research unit at QMW has people studying the techniques, animal research, survival rates and other more ground breaking techniques (electrical stimulation of sphincters once the nerve endings have been removed, other muscle transfers etc.)
Not unlikely therefore that someone should do a PhD or Masters in the topic.
