I left my last job at xmas and a member of my team who hadn't turned up for work 21 months is still on the books
As soon as he got past his probation (literally to the day) he went off sick due to stress outside of work... which counts as a disability, so you can't get rid of them. HR still made me fill in an appraisal for him, but I was not allowed to mention the "disability" that stopped him from coming in. How exactly do you write an appraisal for a year when they did no work but can't mention the reason why?
The disability had all the hall marks of being pissed out of his gourd at 9am.

Strange as it might seem
most alcoholics don't actually enjoy being pissed out of their gourd at 9am. Though I'd agree it's probably not a good idea to keep paying them money to fund it.

They seem to prefer it to being sober at 9am.
Coming in to the office each day would have kept him off it if he had the will power.
