This is a normal post click click click! And 'citation needed'
I can't remember who it was but someone very early on demonstrated to Harris and Churchill that they should strip the planes right down - ditch all gunners and crew with the bare minimum - then fly high as pos and fast as pos. Even painted brilliant white and covered in fairy lights, Losses would have been far far lower. The guns were fucking pointless.
Edit: Aha - Read this b y Freeman Dyson

This is a normal post When compared to what any German plane was throwing at the Lancastersguns definatly lacked
And even the American had come up with the Totaly stripped down bomber and flew them in the bomber formation, to take on the fighters

Besides the Lancaster having crap guns for self defence the only armour plating to protect crew was fitted to the back of the seats, BUT not all of them, and there are several sources with details about raids that Bomber Harris stated that he wanted all armour plating removed from the planes so that they could carry one or 2 extra bombs or containers of incendury devices.

This link has some comparison data of types and calibres of ammunition used by us and the damned hun www.quarryhs.co.uk/BoB.htm

This is a normal post In addition
although there were relatively few German night fighters they did come equipped with 'crooked music' - guns that could offset 60 degrees upwards. Strafing runs from below at fighter speed...

This is a normal post And also later in the war the crafty ol gerryys had the first air to air missile
That used wire guided controls to steer on to its target, i believe this would have been mid to late 1944, these are very differant to the spin stabilized unguided rockets that first found use in the first world war

either way the crews of bombers must have had a hell of a time kowing that there number could be up at any moment once they climbed aboard there plane.

EDIT also dont forget that the Schräge Musik could also be fired by photoelectric cell

This is a normal post The unsportsman like behaviore of Fritz and his scientists also produced the working
Infrared night vision systems fitted onto tanks towards the end of the conflict they had managed to develop that fitted on to an ifantry mans rifle, although the battery pack was a considerable size.

those scientists had a lot of oppertunitirs to devize weapons and systems to deliver them on a money no object basis.

This led to many things that are taken for granted these days

This is a normal post After Hitler came to power
There was a massive increase in funding for all branches of the armed servies, and a matching increase in scienific research that could be weaponised and led to many of the weapons systems that they used against us, there reseaerch into nuclear weapons was on a different track to that taken by the Americans, but did poses advanced infrared triggers to detonate the devices they where working on, the design was stolen/copyed some even say given to the US and used on there bombs that ended WW2
It was this advanced technology that led to the formation and execution of operation paper clip this was to find and appropriate the scientists and ship them to the US under asumed names, the most famous of these men was the head of the US space program Werner von Braun

This is a normal post Two schools of thought
The Mosquito with naff all armour and arms, but so quick nowt could touch it and the lumbering 'Puff the Magic Dragon*' Fortresses who could give as good as they got.

*I know they were C130s and in later years, but I don't know the nickname for the WW2 gunships.
