My local train station was called Ampersand for a time
During the war, the lads were told to paint out the place names on stations. So they did, but left the &, as it wasn't a place name. The passengers would ask for a ticket in London to Ampersand, and everyone knew where it was. So much for confusing German spies. Trufax.
