This is a normal post And fair play to them.
Surely that's the point of being an undergraduate.

This is a normal post No. It's about banning people from speaking, tearing down old statues, and banning books and stuff in order to make a safe space.

This is a normal post They were the bits I enjoyed.
Not my speakers, statues, books and stuff obvs.

I don't think the 'safe space' stuff is as prevalent as is reported, but it might be, I don't know. It smells of something to get people outraged about. Old statues, who cares really. Some statued figures were relevant and celebrated in one time, not so in another. Build 'em up, rip 'em down, the history books will record the good and bad.

Banning any book is abhorrent, as is banning any legal speakers. My dealer used to disagree with me about the weight of the dope he was selling me. Through that I learnt about portable scales, how to get along with people who think they have power over you, and when to shut the fuck up and run.

This is a normal post They're dishing out a lot more firsts these days, 10% or even more is typical, it was a pretty freakish thing in my day.
I fear the safe space thing is real.

This is a normal post Perhaps, I don't know.
Firsts did seem to be the preserve of those who'd totally misunderstood the point of higher education. Or totally understood. I always found those students less fun than the rest, but consequentially far richer and with more influence than me.

But anyway, who outside the civil service really cares about a first v a desmond? It's about what you do and can do, surely. Certainly been the case in my profession (IT).

Here, have a funky flutey song.

This is a normal post You do know that students are paying £9,000 per year for a degree now?
Paying £300 per week for something has a way of concentrating your mind...

This is a normal post Your logic doesn't stand up to any scrutiny.
The fact is a greater number and greater proportion of people are attending universities. This is not going to raise academic standards. There has been an explosion of really unacademic and unintellectual courses (e.g. hospitality management). This is not going to raise standards. It's a Douglas Hurd for you my simple friend.

This is a normal post A Third for you too then
for representing your fears as fact, and offering no supporting evidence for your objectively provable assertions.

This is a normal post It is reasonable to assume that worthwhile subject matter for
University level education has not magically become objectively easier or harder since 50 years ago.

If is also reasonable to assume that humans have not evolved significantly in Britain such that we are objectively any cleverer on average than 50 years ago.

The only thing we know we have changed is that we are now putting approximately 50% of people through further education, where it would have been only the most able 10% around 50 years ago.

So either we should see an absolute truck load of people getting 3rds, or the grading standards must have been made less rigorous. Or one of the assumptions is incorrect (hint: we definitely haven't become cleverer).

This is a normal post You may be working harder, but you're definitely not getting any brighter.
Either way, you're hard work.
