I read your stuff with great interest.
One of my brothers is profoundly deaf, and he experienced something similar when he switched from analogue to digital hearing aids - totally overwhelmed by the additional sounds he was picking up, and it affected his ability to lip read. However, some years later he is so used to them that recently he had some older hearing aids while he was being upgraded to some even smarter new digital ones. He hated the old ones, really, really hated them, and was incredibly frustrated that the new ones were delayed. He's got the new ones now and is a different person.
So, fingers crossed you'll experience something similar - a long period of difficult adjustment, but eventually you wouldn't go back.
