Sonic never translated well into 3D, a game about moving at speed needed tight controls that the old consoles just couldn't pull off
Mario worked in 3D because the game was slower paced, more about exploration and a focus on fluid controls. The Chaos were cool in Sonic Adventure, but the actual meat and chips of the game was rushed and poorly designed.
It didn't help that later offerings, Sonic '06, Sonic Unleashed, and the abysmal Sonic Boom were actually broken either. Sonic Generations is actually pretty good, and Sonic All Star Racing is excellent, so good in fact that the latest Mario Kart shamelessly copies its mechanics.
