I had dream the other night where I was playing an augmented reality version of Mario Kart.
On a go-kart track with a Google glass-style HUD in the helmet visor.
Provided real-time red shells and bananas.
Can someone who knows about technologies tell me if this is possible?
And if not *thumps table* WHY not?

I think you would find it's nearly possible.
The problem you would have is getting the tracking good enough. It's nearly there but not quite accurate & fast enough on consumer kit.
The other problem is finding someone willing to be sued to oblivion after someone inevitably kills themselves trying to go for a powerup.

It's alright...
Lakitu just fishes you out and puts you back on the track.

Were the cars too good at braking a little, then turning, then accelerating, then braking a little bit and turning again?

There is a clip from "Man to Man with Dean Learner"
that sums this up perfectly.
Unfortunately the youtube copyright police have it blocked in the UK so I can't give a link.
