This is a link post Relaxing video of making expensive bespoke shotguns.
Nearly 20 minutes long but probably the most relaxing 20 minutes of 2014 so far.

This is a normal post When i wuz a lad
I went on a guided tour of this place. Me mum was in the habit of phoning up strange places and asking if she could get a tour, this was one of them. Amazing how many places will show you around if you got a nice little old grey haired lady to ask them.

This is a normal post That was ace!
I'm not a massive fan of firey death sticks, but the craftsmanship and engineering of that is something I can very much understand! Theres some beautiful work in there!

This is a normal post Fabulous workmanship
and helpful in justifying their huge price. You know you're dealing with craftsmen when they have to make their own tools.

This is a normal post Lovely to see craftsmanship like that
But I can't help but think what an utter ballache at the same time. So much refinement and tinkering. A CNC machine would have got it perfectly accurate first time.

I can understand the desire to have a craftsman's touch on something like a musical instrument, but surely the worth of a gun is measured against its accuracy?

Or do they just sit on mantel pieces?

This is a normal post A Casio watch can tell the time just as well as a Breitling

This is a normal post Yeah, I realise these are probably going to be ornamental/decorative
Bizarre though when you actually think about it.

Although I think you'll find a lot of watch making is done using CAD/CNC fabrication.

Isn't this true of literally anything attached to a brand though...

This is a normal post I guess it depends on the item/use
If it's decorative, I can understand the desire to have an artisan object. But, to use the linked example, if I was actually going out shooting I would prefer a computer controlled manufacturing process to meet those infinitesimal tolerances required for perfect accuracy.

I don't think that necessarily puts something in the realm of cheapness, either. For example, my mate works for a company that makes carbon fibre components for F1 cars. A process that's heavily computer controlled and perfected (aside from the actual laying up of the carbon fibre itself). But those components still cost the earth/perform their task in a far superior way to when things were all hand-tooled by highly skilled craftsmen.
