That nice Mr Gove wants every pupil to have the opportunity to read all the great stuff in the bible. Now with approximately 8,100,000 pupils in England and the estimated time it takes to read the bible straight through at 76 hours, means that lots of kids will have a long wait to get their hands on that book.
It only cost £370,000 for this initiative which charities & philanthropists paid for. Another glittering triumph for this government!

we had to wipe our arses with tracing paper, as I recall. It just used to smear it everywhere.

He didn't come back and perform a ghostly revenge on his murderers did he? All guns blazing and shit?

The bible has had a huge influence over many aspects of contemporary culture & children should have a chance to peruse. However, I think there are FAR, FAR more important things to learn about currently lacking from the curriculum.

plus, Christians are usually the least Christian people you will ever meet

I'm very anti myself, but do find the subject extremely interesting. And horrifying.

but I always understood Culture to mean 'The way we (or others) do things in general', but I suppose you mean the arts etc.

I meant that it's unarguable that christianity has had a huge impact culturally/socially, but I resisted commenting on positive/negative. My opinion is that it's been a HUGELY negative influence.
Though regardless of subjective opinion it's a fascinating phenomenon.

I think that at least a vague familiarity with the Bible probably is a pre-requisite for understanding several aspects of the culture - but, by the same token, so is a familiarity with Ovid, Homer, Shakespeare, Chaucer... Important as the Bible may be, it's not uniquely important.

And the Spork.
We should definitely make sure all kids have these things.

but if charities and philanthropists want to spend/waste their money on providing bibles to schools then that's up to them really

Slightly countered by the fact that the bible itself is such a terrible, terrible promotional tool.

It's not like they are sending in copies of the Quran or the Vedas is it? I'm all for teaching about all religions equally, but not trying to force feed a specific case.

It's just a vanity project that thankfully we aren't footing the bill for.

I distinctly recall receiving a Gideons bible when at school, we all did. I'm not religious whatsoever, but my Wife is catholic. I enjoy mocking her about how she is going to hell, what due to all the sex, babies and stuff before marriage (though apparently you can just say sorry before you die, how about that?). Church services plain freak me out, especially catholic ones. All the chanting, strange. Even so I think kids should be aware of religion in general, so in later life they can make an informed decision about what they want to believe.
I still own but never did read my Gideons bible, but I drew in it with pen (possibly a CDC)

As far as I'm concerned that is hell.

With the Missus and her family being catholic I occasionally have to frequent a church service

And then you could download the bible and read it for free...

everyone should get a real look at what a load of old shit the Quran really is.
