This is a question Books

We love books. Tell us about your favourite books and authors, and why they are so good. And while you're at it - having dined out for years on the time I threw Dan Brown out of a train window - tell us who to avoid.

I fucking love books.
Not just reading them, but the smell and the texture of paperbacks. I've often bought a book just because I like the cover and I get quite anxious if I haven't got another book ready when I've finished the current one. I'm not particulary well read or literary but I just love books.

I got two new bookcases for Christmas this year. Yay!

Kindles can fuck right off.

I don't love books?
I'm pretty sure I do.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:21, closed)
no, not that.
i love books too. but my kindle is fucking ACE.

I understand why some people like them but I just couldn't imagine curling up in bed with a kindle.
I guess it's my age.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:25, closed)
I agree
and a Kindle leant up against the wall doesn't make your home look cosy and personal when people come around.

having a kindle doesn't mean you have to throw all your books away.
and it's MUCH comfier for reading in bed.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:30, closed)
Means you're not
buying any more books though.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:35, closed)
no it doesn't.
it means i only buy the acutal books i want to look at and covet and read until they're tattered. all the other crap that takes my fancy, i get on my kindle.

Hmmmm
There's lots of classics free on the kindle too. You're starting to persuade me it might not be such a terrible idea.

my daughter got a kindle for christmas.
she's just finished little women and is embarking upon pride and prejudice. she still loves 'real' books though, and has followed my example of saving some of her favourites to pass to her own children.

BUT
If you drop it in the bath, leaving ovenight on a radiator won't help.
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:50, closed)
Oddly enough, it will

I rather like having my books in e-format
I don't think I could handle a Kindle though - I hate that flashy "refresh page" thing it does when page-turning
(, Thu 5 Jan 2012, 14:40, closed)
I like this
I have these exact same thoughts and feelings on books.

You had me at
the smell and texture of paperbacks. If you were to dab some of that behind your ears you'd have to beat me off with a club...erm, you know what I mean...

plus
I have left numerous books on the tube with only mild regret whereas a rather expensive electronic device would be a much more annoying loss.

In addition no-one has mugged me for any of the books I was reading. Mocked perhaps but not mugged.

Also it's Stalin's dream. Only virtual copies of everything and imperfect human memory. Nothing is real Baudrillard was right. (A bit, probably not about the gulf war.)

I'm with you all the way on this
