Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."
My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.
What stuff do you think is common?

My husband works at a primary school on a council estate.
One child, a girl, is called.........
Nokia.
I declare this to be the most common thing ever!

I work in an NHS call centre where people call in for advice for their kids.
We get some corking names.
One of my favourites where twin three year olds called, and I shit you not, Sierra and Mondeo.

Passionelle, Desire and Lustina.
This was only matched by my neighbour's children - Spike and Rocky.

No offense ment, ofcourse. This QotW has made some people a bit touchy, so a small disclaimer seems in place

that reminds me of that old harry enfield sketch where wayne and waynetta call their child 'spudulike*' because 'it's exotic, innit?' :D
*pronounced 'spud-ooo-lickah', with the stress on the 'ooo'.

I heard a parent admonishing her child in loud tones: "Ammonia! Put that down and come 'ere!".
I thought I must have misheard, but luckily the little girl was disobedient so "Ammonia!!" rang out twice more.
I can only suppose her mother thought it implied Spirit.
It was nearly, but not quite, topped but the unfortunate brat "Justice" who was being shouted at in the shopping centre the next day.

Named after the purveyor of blingtastic mobile phones-or the less exotic Nokia who make welly boots and bicycle tyres.........
Actually Nokia is a nice peacful little town in Finland, been there, got the T shirt. Well I didn't but I did get pair of wellies :-)

I've some great names from working in schools in "interesting" area's - Jhaydanha, Phoxx and Shayde are probably the top three. Why do people think they need to honour their little darling with the most ridiculous spellings of words that aren't even names?
