This is a question Dad stories

"Do anything good for your birthday?" one of your friendly B3TA moderator team asked in one of those father/son phone calls that last two minutes. "Yep," he said, "Your mum." Tell us about dads, lack of dad and being a dad.

My dad once told me
that due to the babysitter (I preferred "childminder", I was nearly 8, after all) cancelling at the last minute, he'd be forced to call the police and have me arrested, then call them the next day and drop all charges to get me back. It'd be OK, he said, I wouldn't have to share with any more than two people, and they'd give me a blanket and some porridge.
Sadly, this is actually true.
This was the first time I ever remember properly properly crying.

Whenever I was acting up...
...my dad would get on the phone to the Naughty Girls Home and begin to make arrangements for them to come and take me away. I'd scream, cry, apologize almost instantly for whatever it was that i'd done and beg to be allowed to stay, and he'd tell the person at the home not to bother because I wasn't going to be naughty again. This masterful (and possibly risky in the long-term) game of brinksmanship worked like a charm every time with minimal fuss and it ensured that i'd behave myself for the next few days at least. Good old dad.
