It's honestly Ape-proof.
The biggest expense would be a NAS box and the drives to put in it, but you could bypass that if you're happy to have the power consumption of a proper PC going whilst you're in another room.

I've got a mac mini to do that
Runs as a wireless music server and is hardwired to my AV amp in the living room.
