personally, the way i see it
battered was deeply unhappy with his marriage, sure the wife went off him a long time ago but he came to terms with it

he tried it on with the PA today though and she utterly rejected him, in a fit of futile upset he was handed his P45 and shown the door, pending legal ramifications for the sexual harrassment/assault

the wife then greeted him when he got home from work early, he told her the truth and she smashed his favourite diana memorial dinner plates. he sobbed, broke down and had a go at gonz to make himself feel better

and thats how it happened
