This is a question Tightwads

There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

Tipping
I was in Turkey a few years back. In Fethiye fish market you could (then) buy your choice of fish from a stall and take it to one of the restaurants there. For the equivalent of £2.50 they would cook it and serve it to you, along with fresh salad and bread. After a very nice meal with excellent service I paid up and left a £1.50 tip.

A friend of mine, who was living there on a boat at the time, argued that this was far too much and in the end I just walked off. Half an hour later we all met up again and she presented me with my tip, which she had taken back.

£1.50 FFS!

Tight tourists in Turkey
are the lowest of the low. I saw people refusing to pay the 5p to use a public toilet, even though it paid the wages of the poor bugger whose job it was to keep it clean. And don't get me started on the backpackers who spend half the evening walking up and down the main street in Fethiye trying to save 2p on a beer.

I know it's different for people who live out there and earn local salaries, but tourists who stress themselves out trying to save piddling sums of money instead of just chilling out when they're supposed to be on holiday are just wankers.

Totally agree...
Especially as this was not too long after 9/11 and tourist numbers (especially Merkins) was well down. They were all really struggling to make a living.

My friend's husband, as tight as she, would haggle with the bartenders to save a penny on a beer, reckoning he was entitled to locals rates.

Pah!

I hate that...
One or two people have given money back to me I've left as a tip - it's my money so it's my bloody choice as I see it.
