This is a question Unemployed

I was Mordred writes, "I've been out of work for a while now... however, every cloud must have a silver lining. Tell us your stories of the upside to unemployment."

You can tell us about the unexpected downsides too if you want.

I work for a big mobile firm that rhymes with Bo Poo....
This week my job is at risk from redundancy, and (although I am sh*ting my pants) I am weighing up the odds.
Potentially I have 7mths wages as a pay out.
I have debts of about half of that I could pay off.
I am interested in learning a trade - this is why I am posting this to my fellow b3tans.
Am I being a fool? Or should I get redeployed into a role I don't want but will pay my mortgage (I have 3 kids also).
Apologies for the lack of punchline.... :-(

If you're going to go
go in the first round. Experience suggests that if those who go in the first round get nice pay-offs, those in the second round get fuck-all because by that time the company can't afford it.

Thanks - I think that also....
....would rather stay in comfort zone but if needs must want to grasp the opportunity rather than let them dictate my fate.

My advice would be
not to pay the debts off with the money. Wait until you are earning again.

Is the redeployment an option within your company - if so, how secure would it be and how do you know the role isn't for you ?

Difficult to advise about the learning a trade issue. Depends what it is, but the problem is that when demand is low, the supply will always be people with experience, which you won't have, being a newbie.

Gaz me if you want to discuss this further.

Credit Card Protection
Find out if your credit card company can offer you card insurance against redundancy, so if/whenyou are made redundant the cdredit cardf company will be paying off a portion of your card. Doesn't hurt to investigate.
