Eh?Payment by cheque would indicate that the payment is not being made by direct debit or have I missed something?

Perhaps it was I who missed something.But if the policy auto-renewed but no money was taken you could just tell them to piss off, since they would have no way of getting your money. An auto-renew feature may be favoured by associations etc. but I wouldn't have thought it legally binding enough that you'd feel obliged to pay them by cheque.
