Having your crops and therefore livelihood devastated on a regular basis by swarms of herbivorous insects isn't a problem?

It's a bit chicken and egg.
If consumers didn't expect every produce in abundance all year round, then supermarkets wouldn't be under so much pressure and wouldn't pass that pressure on to farmers to ensure a crop, and if moving produce globally wasn't so easy and cheap then prices paid to farmers wouldn't be so low, and so they wouldn't have to ensure a full crop on time every year. And why do consumers expect all produce all year round? Because the supermarket told them it was available.

If we crack cheap clean energy this problem goes away as we can grow things locally hydroponically.
It'd be good for developing countries too. If energy is in abundance desalination can be done etc.

Trump's planning ahead
Another 50 years of heavy coal use and we'll be able to boil water just by putting it outdoors, free steam power for all!
