I follow the classic car auctions, and it seems that estimates have become very difficult.
I don't know if the trend is the same with watches, but it seems cars that can be driven often and need less constant maintenance are selling better than the sort of cars that would just have gone in to a collection, whereas ten years ago it was all hyper rare classics that would be museum pieces.

Back from spending a few hours with the dying man.
Every time he paused between breaths, I held mine, but then he inhaled again. He may yet make it to tomorrow.

Still, now I know very clearly what a death rattle sounds like.
(, Thu 26 Oct 2017, 20:44, archived)
Is it not kinder at this point to go at him with a pillow?

(, Thu 26 Oct 2017, 20:50, archived)
Nah, he's unconscious and morphined up to the eyeballs so he doesn't seem to be in any pain now.
I don't think it's possible to exclude the possibility that actively stopping him breathing might actually cause more discomfort than letting him stop by himself.

Anyway, he's lying on all the pillows and he's still surprisingly heavy.
(, Thu 26 Oct 2017, 20:54, archived)
Fair.
In spite of my being a dick head, I hope you and your girlfriend are ok, and that the family can celebrate his life once he's passed.

It's good that the end stage has been very quick, he was just given the terminal diagnosis 7 days ago.
Cirrhosis/liver failure/cancer. He claims to have stopped drinking years ago, but I don't believe that for a second. Unfortunately the girlfriend does, and said the other night that she didn't think he was actually a proper alcoholic. I had to remind her that her parents separated when she was 5, largely because of his drinking. Also the tins of lager that his current wife has mentioned are in the fridge...

Fuck it, I'm having another beer in his impending memory. It's literally what he would have wanted.

This is before anyone cared; when they started selling records the actual US Dust Brothers (Beastie Boys producers) threatened legal action over the name. I never liked 'The Chemical Brothers' as name but it's better than 'Dust Brothers UK' which they were also considering.

"Toad's English name appears to have been inspired by the word "toadstool", a word used to describe mushrooms including those featuring umbrella-like cap-and-stem form characteristics which Toad's design portrays along with the character's general resemblance to a mushroom. Toad's Japanese name "Kinopio" appears to be a mixture of the Japanese word for mushroom ("kinoko") and the Japanese name for the character Pinocchio ("Pinokio") which both roughly blend together to form the meaning of "a real mushroom boy" (as evidenced through Pinocchio's desire to become a real boy in his own tale)."

On the one hand, a lot of people act like nitpicky eejits when househunting.
On the other hand, I was one of those people when I was looking for my old house. I wouldn't have made a fuss about wanting a bath rather than a shower if there'd been room to put a bath in, though. That's just thick.
(, Wed 25 Oct 2017, 10:29, archived)
We ripped the bath out in the first place because we wanted more space
So a bath would fit in there. I get that people want to be picky...god knows *I* will be. It's an important decision. But the reasons these people are giving are just ridiculous.
(, Wed 25 Oct 2017, 10:34, archived)
Yeah.
My old place used to have a bath but the previous owners ripped it out because the woman was on the verge of having to use a wheelchair and she couldn't get in and out of it any more (they had all the doorways specially widened for the same reason, which was actually kind of handy).

I turned down an otherwise nice place with a lovely garden because the roof sloped too severely and basically halved the size of all the upstairs rooms. Fitting a bath is a relatively easy DIY project; changing the slant of the roof is not.
