I think it's a product of the ready availability of confirmation biasing 'news' via t'internet. and it's not just the yanks; Brexit/ remain here, right v left across Europe, Sunni v Shia in Middle East etc etc
The only stable country without such dissent seems to be Russia. Mainly by arranging 'accidents' for minority dissenters!
