(the dad of a kid called roper at our school removed the centre of a conker and replaced it with some industrial resin stuff ... not all that sporting but slightly befuddled the teacher who failed to break it with a hammer and a brick)

The pickling is a con..
It only ever made them slightly squishy. They didn't shatter, but you may as well have had a mouse on the end of your string.

You have to pickle it for about 6 months
then leave it to dry in the airing cupboard for another 6 months.
You don't use it wet.

Conkers with mice...
Would you use the mice dead or alive or perhaps live mice and the first one to snuff it is the loser?
No need for strings as the tails would suffice I suppose.

I had access....
I had access to a huge conker supply (Through my dad's connections at a zoo) to a limitless supply of conkers. I used to bring them in by the carrier bag full loads to school and sell them.
I was the local Conker dealer... :)

Had a friend who:
1. Baked it
2. Soaked it in vinegar for 3 days.
3. Covered it in brown sauce.
4. Put in the airing cupboard for a month.
First hit is shattered.
