The pickling is a con..It only ever made them slightly squishy. They didn't shatter, but you may as well have had a mouse on the end of your string.

I had access.... I had access to a huge conker supply (Through my dad's connections at a zoo) to a limitless supply of conkers. I used to bring them in by the carrier bag full loads to school and sell them.
