You should take up a good internal art, such as Kung fu, Tai Chi or Aikido, where its less about pure strength, and more about technique.

Karate and those arts are good fun, and great excercise, but in terms of self defence they aren't that useful until you get very good at it.
if you want self defense, learn something like jiu-jitsu or akido or take a self defense course.
