In a nutshell
if the ball is passed to the attacker and there is no defender between the attacker and the goalkeeper, he is ruled offside as soon as his boot touches the ball.

It's in a nutshell. That is what offside is. A rule to stop players hanging around the goal. The offside trap and all the other boring stuff that goes with it is just embellishments of the main rule.
