This isn't meant to sound like a criticism, just a hopeful prod for people to try and push the jokes further

# pffft!
Chalky would win everything

Having said that, isn't the MOBOs dominated with white acts nowadays?

(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:16, archived)
# Yes
that's because lots of white people now make shit 'urban' 'music'.

# You could argue that all music is of black origin, so why shouldn't it be?
Steps have as much right to win a MOBO as Luthor Vandross

# Aiiii, dat's coz we is all tryin' ta be black
coz we aint got no identity.

That, and if there was a 'music of white origin' awards we'd get lambasted for racism. Bloody hate double standards like that, I do. You can have a black club at uni, but a white one'll get you some dodgy looks. Not that I particularly want one, I do realise that just because I am the same colour as someone else doesn't mean we'll have anything in common, but I don't like that it's one rule for one and one rule for another.

For instance, I've pretty much said this before in the pub. And got accused of being racist. Of course, that's why I'm marrying a mixed race man. Oh and don't forget, I'm a cunt because 300odd years ago some other people that happened to be the same colour as me were involved with the slave trade. That makes ME the arsehole. Yep.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:20, archived)
# You're marrying a mixed race man because you're a racist?
I'm not sure you've quite got the hang of racism yet...
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:21, archived)
# It's the ultimate disguise.
:D You know what I mean.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:22, archived)
# Spot on!
If there were MOWO Awards, there'd be uproar. Not all music is of Black origin, name me one black Classical composer! I too detest double standards!!! I-(
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:23, archived)
# There have probably been some, I'm not that up on classical music.
But that's not my point, I don't agree with there being a celebration of anyones colour if those of a different colour aren't allowed to celebrate. That's fucking RACISM, innit.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:27, archived)
# music is the first language of man
drum beats and rhythm was used for communication long before speech, therefore you simply need to identify the skin colour of neolythic man and you have your answer as to what colour musics origin was

DO not forget also, that Samuel Coleridge Taylor was mixed race.

# always remind people like that that Black people were slave traders too
it goes down a treat :D
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:24, archived)
# Now I didn't know that, but thanks for the ammo.
Because there is a group of chavs in our town that likes to scream things like 'DIRTY WHITE CUNT' etc.

This should be fun.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:25, archived)
# the slave trade obviously also isn't just about selling black people
us "whiteys" got nicked and sold to African princes too you know, And it still goes on according to the news

But the Vikings did it to everyone they came in contact with, Catholics would have Christian Slaves and vice versa, Nazi Germany was one bug slave factory, you name it each era of human evolution has been a wanker to it's neighbours. Skin colour doesn't really have that much to do with it.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:30, archived)
# Also something I didn't know.
I'm not that well informed, to be honest, I'm just getting stampy due to my own experience.

That, and because manwife is quite pale for a mixed race person, he gets teeth sucked at him for having dreadlocks. This hurts him, so it makes me FUCKING ANGRY. Even if he were white, if he's only allowed to have 'white' hair, like a crop or something, black people are only allowed to wear tribal dress. You can't have rules for one and not the other, it's not fair.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:33, archived)
# Basically, every civilisation up until very recently had a slave trade.
The reason that we think of slaves as black is purely because we know of that difference and because the US slave trade was predominantly African.

The reality is though that the slaves were transported by whites (the Manleys were a large name in slave trading) but that those men did nothing on the attaining front.

They simply set down in Africa and bought slaves from the locals who were invariably black themselves.

Slavery is shit, but it is not a race issue.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:58, archived)
# Well you learn something new every day.
Cheers for the info.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 11:10, archived)
# ^^This
The African tribes that the European slave traders delt with had been selling slaves amongst themselves for decades before any white man came along.
And they SOLD the slaves to the traders. it's not like the traders went in there with big nets. the communities there thought it was a reasonable exhange at the time.
and yes, it ended up terribly for those sold, but the european traders were just getting in on an existing trade and expanding it.

# but
The MOBO awards isnt 'awards for black people', it's awards for music of black ORIGIN. Much like you could have a country and western awards ceremony (they do, its shit). Sectioning music off into smaller genre's is not racist, whether black or white.

To have an awards ceremony for MOWO - now what would that be? Thats a massively diverse area, mroe diverse than MOBO i suspect. At least with black ORIGIN, you can argue Motown, Jazz, R & B (the original), R & B (new), Urban. MOWO would be, pop, country and western, classical, more jazz, indie, rock, dance etc etc.

The point is Black musics origins are something that people are proud of and want to celebrate. Turning it into a 'we hate the PC brigade' diatribe about double standards doesnt work, all the organisers have done is said 'We WANT to celebrate this section' not 'You CANT celebrate that section'.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:33, archived)
# That's why I said we can't have a
'music of white origin' award, not 'music made by white people'. Because just by the words somebody would be offended, I wager more than would be offended by the current wording of the MOBOs.

No, they haven't said you can't celebrate music of white origin, but as I pointed out and will do so again, were such an awards ceremony created people would be up in arms.

Sectioning music off into smaller genres is not racist, you're right, but that wasn't the point I was making.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:36, archived)
# RACIST ;)
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:41, archived)
# So it is all based on
presumtion? You presume that the MOWO's would have a reverse Littlejohn effect?

But the point still stands. Black music, until quite recently, was a very exclusively black genre (lets not get into why and how), but it was generally created, progressed and made by black people. This of course is not the case now, however why shouldn't people be proud of creating that? If you get annoyed because it uses the word Black, when you wouldnt be allowed to say White, then that doesnt make sense. The music IS of black origin. There is no getting around that.

You can rename the Brits to The Whites if you wish, but im pretty sure some of the music they play will be of a black origin.

You are clearly not a racist, and have clearly experienced racism to both yourself and your fella, but it then baffles me how you call the reverse racism card on something like this, which appears to me to have a legitimate existence.

# By the way
This isnt me being Captain Aggro, im not fuming or anything, just so you know.
(, Thu 24 Jan 2008, 10:44, archived)
# Actually the point was more in my head
because I've already discussed this at college, and I was called a racist by people of both colours for even bringing the point up (and had it written on my bag in tippex, had signs put on my back proclaiming me to be so and general other things like that which did not please me, made me feel like shit and got me threatened) - so basing my argument on the people I discussed it with before here, that was the reaction I received. You may be more educated than those people, but certainly not all people are like yourself.

I realise you're not being Captain Aggro, it's nice to discuss this with an intelligent human being.
