then convert the .flv to .avi with

Then I edit it in Windows Movie Maker, export as .wmv. Then convert to .avi to either upload to YouTube or create a .gif.

That's how I do it.

I use GIF Movie Gear to make my .gifs, you can import .avi files, piece a piss. (I don't actually make the frames with Movie Gear)

But I use ffmpeg to convert them to mpeg and then "extract videorange" in The Gimp.
