# the money that comes in from tourism, tv rights, blah blah blah
is a staggering amount.
Plus all the redevelopment gets used for stuff afterward etc etc etc

Hard to believe it IS value for money, but some people think so

# could be worse it could be the world cup

# As opposed to Poles and Latvians.
who are just cheap germans anyway

# That would be really fucking terrible eh
I would see it as payback for a Berlin full of ignorant, drunk, loud, annoying Brit twats
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 16:53, archived)
# i suppose that would be fair actually considering the amount of football violence we export
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 17:02, archived)
# Not seen much of that
Just whenever there are loud beer-fuelled yobs smashing bottles and kicking off car mirrors on the streets near where I live, they are inevitably shouting with "english" accents.

# If it's so damned profitable
let private investors pay for it.

Harrumph.

# haha true

# i want to see it here every year
combined with eurovision and the world cup.

# Personally
I like the olympics and as a leading developed country, I think we should take our turn and am happy we got it.

If everyone stopped moaning and got behind it, it'd be a whole lot more successful and something we could be proud of.

# very much this^
i often wonder how many of the whiners would go to watch it if it was on somewhere else, same applies to any major sporting, cultural or ceremonial event
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 16:36, archived)
# I've decided to be largely supportive
of absolutely fucking everything, just cos I'm sick of the whinging attitude towards everything that the majority of the country has adopted.
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 16:47, archived)
# you and me both
the whingers can just shut up and sit in the corner and sulk. this is a bloody wonderful country, with lots of marvellous and talented people in it, it's not short of a bob or two either so lets make some noise and show off a bit.
we should perhaps refrain from trying to reclaim the empire though, that'll only end in tears.

# wasn't short of a bob or two

# I'm with you on the leading developed country
At least you have enough electricity to meet the country's needs.
Which is important really for hosting big things.

going to be played in the dark then?
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 16:43, archived)
# I don't understand why we need to 'take our turn'
That presupposes that we actually need a massive event where 'adults' run in circles and jump over things. If we're going to do our bit as a leading developed country, perhaps this should take the form of giving the money to nations where people can't afford to eat and not having the running in circles.

# If the government only spent money on things that everybody liked it wouldnt spend anything at all
Just sayin'
(, Fri 20 Jun 2008, 16:43, archived)
# I'd prefer that my taxes were spent hosting the Olympics, plus the whole regeneration of East London that it'll bring
plus the creation of jobs and facilities

than it given to chavs to sit at home and do fuck all, or to the scottish to bribe them into quitting the fags
