after my dad's near arrest 20 years ago i'd offer this piece of advice, if you want to stab a burglar with it, have a legitimate reason for keeping it in the house not the garage.

my dad went to his neighbours aid (well she became my neighbour, but i wasn't born) and grabbed a 9 iron on the way out. when the cops turned up (either no burglar was there, or they'd scarpered when she started moving about to get to next door) they asked if he'd brought it with him. apparently if he'd used it against any intruders at his neighbour's house they'd have been forced to arrest and charge him with malicious assault, as taking the "weapon" was intent. however if he'd picked up one of her frying pans it would be self defence as the "weapon" was already in the house

If you keep a baseball bat by your bed and take it downstairs with you that is intent, although logically providing you know that you could just lie and say it was in the umbrella stand or something.
