karate, or maybe tae kwon? He's just a beginner, and everyone looks like a nob to begin with. I still did after doing it for 4 years

Looks like Tae Kwon Do to me.
He's doing alright! I can't get my leg very high either, especially on a side kick. Needs to sort out his reaction hand though, but that'll come. And more hip.
Funny enough, I have a grading on Saturday with a pre-grading rehearsal tonight, along with the wife and kids.
[edit] After a bit of a looksie it is TaeKwonDo, ITF style and the Tul (or kata for Japanese arts) is Eui-Am a Dan grade pattern.
