housing developments get held up for a multitude of reasons
the newt thing is a bit ridiculous but certain nesting birds, bats, any number of other protected species, archaelogical discoveries etc etc hold things up or can developments entirely. But the usual reason is simply local opposition.

If there's a need then fine.
But in this case it's bollocks.

I believe the GCN
was protected in statutory law by Thatcher, so leaving EU might make no difference. Stick that in your Brexit fact-free pipe and smoke it.

Maybe back in the 80's it was needed or maybe thatcher just loved them.
That uk law exists from then true, however things in the UK have changed and they're not engendered anymore but the EU law overrides it I guess.
But if people feel strongly about keeping an eu law that was established with the help of boris johnsons daddy then lobby your m.p to save the newt.
Just not Ken Livingston because he doesn't think the newts will be troubled.

it's never as simple as 'we've got loads of them, bulldoze it'
Newts could be a particularly good indicator of something else that would support loads of other species, low pollution or an ancient environment.
It's just developers pushing to build on greenfield rather than brown because they can make more profit
